Editing process

We did the final editing of our film in after effects, a very slow and tedious process but well worth the effort in the end. We were able to do colour and brightness corrections, adjust opacity for fade in/out effects, insert light flashes and stretch footage to get that slow feeling we were after.

Sound for our film

We decided on a slow and instrumental song called 'Home' by Explosions in the Sky.

Projecting our designs

Here are some images of our designs projected onto the garnments:

Final stop motion film of my dress

We decided to film a new stop motion of my dress opening to reveal the glowsticks. I used green  glowsticks this time as I felt they were the most relevant to the 'nature' colours that we originally agreed on. It turned out that the green were the brightest of the glowsticks that I have experimented with so far as well.

We put the pictures together into a film and reversed it so that it would be a bit longer:

Music Suggestions

After deciding that we would like to use ambient music within our video I decided to look at some possible music that we could use. Here are a few suggestions:

Projections.

The process of how we created the images and prints ontop of the garments. working off photo shop and after effects, this enabled us to project any image we wanted onto the fabrics.

We used a mixture of programmes to create the film and to add text.

Final filming and photo shoot

Some photos of the final production coming together and the layouts we have chosen to use.

One of the layouts we decided to film our work in which
worked really well once adjusted slightly.
Amanda and Sabina using stop motion to captures amandas glow in the dark garment

Playing around with titlesand headings using projection but were initially going to use a still image to create this, which will work alot better and allow us to be more experimentive.

Projections.

Ideas for how we experimented with projections today, i'm really happy with the outcome, and i think once they are developed into a film it could look really intresting.
The idea is that the original garment hangs and the stop motion video is then projected onto of this, I am going to develop it further by having a second projection over the top which will relate into other group members organic and natural themes.

Light/Dark Reactive Dress

I decided to make a basic dress that would somehow change as it gets darker to reveal the glowsticks glowing. I couldn't really make it get darker as I was in the studio when I took the photos, however I think if I can get onto photoshop and play around with lighting I might be able to make it look darker somehow. These are my videos using stop motion to show my ideas:

Glow in the Dark Fimo

I decided to buy some glow in the dark fimo to experiment with. Still fitting with a flower theme I decided to make a flower that would open as it grew darker. This is the opposite of how flowers should react as flowers usually open in sunlight. However as I want to do something that reacts to light/dark, I thought it would be a good idea. I decided to experiment with stop motion and first made a video in the daylight to get used to it as I hadn't really tried it before.

As I don't have photoshop on my laptop I have to use a trial software for the moment however I will use photoshop to produce my final outcome if I decide to use stop motion.

I then decided to try and experiment with a flower that would grow brighter as it gets darker. This was harder to produce so I decided to photograph it in my bedroom and close the curtains a little bit everytime I moved the flower to open slightly. The finished effect doesn't look professional or very good however I think it portrays the outcome that I was trying to achieve, quite well.

Both videos are really quick however this is because on the trial software I can't slow them down, however using photoshop I will be able to slow down videos if I choose this method for my final outcome.

Suspended garments and smoke

Our group decided to try and create a feel of garments floating in the air in our video, and to also include smoke, representing pollution. I used adobe after effects to achieve the smoke effect, which I think works really well. During a tutorial we also discussed the possibility of a 'video within a video', which I found isn't that difficult to create.

Experimenting with Glowsticks

I decided to experiment with glowsticks just to compare how well they glowed in the dark. I experimented with making a flower shape, however didn't really like the outcome. I think maybe its becasue of the shape being abit too literal, however if I experimented in different ways it might look better.

Projections on photoshop.

I used some images from Manchester to see if i could try and
 use it throughout the video

I did the same photo but used flowers and the inspiration
for the stop motion which i think works better.
Colour experimenting

Ive tried these colours, unsure if they will match with nautral however i think they will look really good with the idea of poluttion and the smoke, Ive also slowed down the video which is now spread 0.5 seconds to try and emphasis a more organic way of change. i think this will look really effective on the idea of suspending the garments.

Drawings

Here are some drawings I ahve done to get me started. I have drawn these without looking at the page and just using a picture that I took myself to look at.

I have used this photo I took to draw the design on the left

I used the photo on the right to draw the design above

Shower Curtain

This is the shower curtain that changes when wet. When the water hits the white parts of the curtain it turns colourful, as the shower curtain turns dry it goes back to normal again.

Fairy Lights

After experimenting with the glow in the dark embroidery thread, I decided to experiment with fairy lights, still using tights to experiment with.

My photographs havent came out very good here.

My idea is something that will grow brighter the darker it becomes. I tried to portray this however the fairy lights I had could only either be off or on, therefore it didnt really work. I would like to try my idea in different ways and maybe use stop motion animation to record something getting brighter as it becomes darker.

Glow in the Dark Embroidery Thread

I decided to steer away from thinking about everyday garments, and started experimenting with tights. I bought some glow in the dark embroidery thread and sewed into some skin coloured tights.

I photographed the embroidery thread by itself and it seemed to glow really well. However when I photographed the tights which I had sewn into the camera didn't pick up the glow. I think that maybe I need to either take the photo in a darker place or learn more about photographing it as I'm maybe using the wrong setting.

Unexpected climate change.
The focus;  the concept of creating a dress that reacts to weather change.

Colour changing clothing

Here I have found an idea that fits in with the group idea really well. Below are two pictures of dresses designed by the company Rainbow Winters. The dress changes colour due to sunlight hitting it. For example, The flowers in the left side picture are plain white and not in sunlight, however as the dress hits sunlight it reacts and changes colour.

Sunday, 22 April 2012

I decided to focus on the light/dark problem, researching various smart textiles and designers/artists. At first I started playing around with glow in the dark paint, but at some point I came a cross a fashion designer, Ying Gao, who had created a light responsive, moving dress. I was really inspired by this, and wanted to look in to it further. I started imagining our clothes resembling a flower, in terms of being closed at night and open in the daytime. You would have details in the clothing that unfold and become visible in daylight. I don't really know how I can make a connection between this idea and pollution yet though...

I had a go at creating a simple white top that would start to grow and change, and continue to do so for the rest of the day, once you step outside in the morning.

Glow in the dark paint

I have been experimenting with glow in the dark paint onto different fabrics. I experimented with dots to see what the result would be. I then exposed them to light to allow the paint to react and then turned the lights off to see how well they glowed. Some fabrics worked better than others. I took photos however my camera didnt pick up some of the reactions very well.

Experiment 1.

I've been experimenting with stop motion and dresses that react with a number of scenarios.
I created a template of a concept that changes shape and design when reacted with heat, the idea behind this is an all in one garment for all weather conditions, which has built in thermometres that controles the style of dress by becoming cooler or warmer for whoever is wearing it.

Just a preview of a few of the still images that capture the growth of the garment.
